What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small text file that is stored on your computer, tablet, mobile phone or, ultimately, on the device you use to browse the Internet, and can save information about how often you visit web pages, your browsing preferences, the information that interests you the most, usernames, product registrations, etc. Depending on the information they contain and how you use your device, they can be used to recognize the user.
Types of cookies
Depending on their nature, cookies can be classified into:
“Session cookies” or “Persistent cookies”: the former are deleted when the browser is closed, while the latter remain on the computer.
“Own cookies” or “Third-party cookies”: depending on whether they belong to the website owner or to a third party.
According to their purpose, they can be:
“Technical cookies”: These are cookies that allow the user to navigate through a website, platform or application and to use the different options or services that exist on it, such as, for example, controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted access parts, remembering the elements that make up an order, carrying out the purchase process of an order, requesting registration or participation in an event, using security elements during navigation, storing content for the dissemination of videos or sound, or sharing content through social networks.
“Personalization cookies”: These are cookies that allow the user to access the service with some general predefined characteristics based on a series of criteria in the user’s terminal, such as the language, the type of browser used to access the service, the regional configuration from where the service is accessed, etc.
“Analysis cookies”: These are cookies that allow the person in charge of them to track and analyze the behavior of users on the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookies is used to measure the activity of websites, applications, or platforms and to create browsing profiles of the users of such sites, applications, and platforms, in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of the data of use made by the users of the service.
“Advertising cookies”: Are those that allow for the most effective management of advertising spaces that the publisher may have included on a website, application or platform from which the requested service is provided, based on criteria such as the edited content or the frequency at which ads are displayed.
“Behavioral advertising cookies”: These are those that allow the most effective management possible of the advertising spaces that, if applicable, the publisher has included on a website, application, or platform from which the requested service is provided. These cookies store information on user behavior obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, allowing the development of a specific profile to display advertising based on it.
