La Latina in Madrid

La Latina’s district is at the downtown of Madrid. Although does not exist a wall bounding the quarter, it might say that La Latina occupies a great part of the called “Madrid de los Austrias”. Its limits are diffuse, but it might be said that they would be these:  In the northern part, Calle Segovia, in the south, Ronda and Puerta de Toledo; in the east part, Calle Toledo – that limits with El Rastro and Lavapiés district- and in the west Calle Bailén.

Why is it called “La Latina”

• For sure it takes its name from the old hospital, founded by the writer and humanist, Beatriz Galindo, popularly known as “La Latina”. Beatriz Galindo was preceptor of the Queen Isabel La Católica and her children. With her husband, founds a hospital in Calle Toledo, next to Plaza de la Cebada which was called Hospital de La Latina.

What can you see in La Latina

• La Latina keeps the essence of a suburb in medieval Madrid with narrow and sinuous streets. You can see the remains of walls that are still there, their churches between streets, the famous viaducto de Segovia, Puerta de Toledo, etc.
• Besides, stand out wonderful plazas and plazoletas: De la Cebada, de la Paja, del Humilladero, San Andrés or Puerta Cerrada.

Tapas and drinks

• La Latina district is one of the most lively neighbourhood. Specially on weekends, its atmosphere is magnificent and many people enjoy tapas drinks and nightlive just in the center of the city.
• From the cultural point of view, you can also go to Teatro La Latina, where you can delight the best theater plays.

• On May are the Fiestas de San Isidro, patron of Madrid. In this district is mostly celebrate on the Jardines de las Vistillas.
